Cut to the chase …
We’re celebrating the great independent businesses in Kirkcaldy – and the latest to feature is Migele Experience. We caught up with owner, Dom Panetta, to discover more …
Dom (Domenico) trained as a hairdresser and started out on his own at just 19 years of age – beginning his self employed career along the Fife coast in Buckhaven.
Dom explains that he was given a break: “I was given a great opportunity to start my own business in terms of a property and a family loan.” That got him on the ladder and after three years in Buckhaven, he grew the business, had a time in Glenrothes before moving to Kirkcaldy.
Today, his business is ‘hairdressing and retail’ – the salon selling product as part of their service to customers who come from all over Fife as well as from further afield. They stock a wide variety of hair care products including the iconic Kerastase range from Paris which they’ve stocked for over 30 years. Their newest and most exclusive brand is Windle and Moodie. Manufactured in the UK and created by the London salon of the same name. They also stock Serie Expert and Tec Ni Art ranges – all from L???Oreal.
At a time when there are a burgeoning number of salons and barber shops, Dom knows that Migele Experience has to stay ahead of the game. How does he do this? He explains: “We have always had a great reputation for training – investment in our staff which has created many successful hairdressers. This has ensured a great delivery of the customer experience.” He adds: “It is part of our culture that every member of our team is customer focused.”
Migele Experience invests in its staff and in the town – and Dom sees that as a crucial role that independent businesses can play in Kirkcaldy. He employs 16 at his salon on Whytehouse Avenue. He doesn’t single out any one of them saying: “Every member of the team is of equal importance and all contribute to our customer experience delivery.”
Nominated and winning numerous awards recognising his hairdressing skills, Dom has also had his work feature in national and international magazines over the years. After more than three decades of success, some might take the foot off the gas. Not Dom. Asked about his greatest achievement in business, he is quick to respond, saying: “My wife and I have managed and grown our business for over 40 years – and we still have a desire to grow the people and the business.” He adds: “The little things are the BIG things. We always aim to exceed our customers’ expectations – to deliver a unique experience that makes you feel fabulous again and again!”
And the drive and determination to improve the offering continues. Dom says: “We’re always looking at ways to enhance the experience. We want to offer our clients a complete service and, to that end, we are in the process of looking for partners to rent our brand new luxury beauty therapies room and our ‘in salon’ nail bar.” Anyone interested should get in touch with Dom.
Dom recognises the challenges of trading in Kirkcaldy – as anywhere – but he is passionate about the town and its future. He explains: “Kirkcaldy has a large population and good catchment area. I love the fact that Kirkcaldy4All is embracing and attracting independent businesses and we’re proud of our history in the town and look forward to the future.”
Most of Migele Experience’s customers are local and loyal: Dom describes clients as “valued friends”. But the business is keen to play its part in helping to promote the town to visitors too. Asked what he’d recommend to a visitor to the town, Dom’s clear: “Take a walk on the Waterfront, enjoy the view – visit the brilliant Kirkcaldy Galleries and grab a coffee on the high street.”
