Love at first bite!

Across the country, around a third of all town centre businesses are independent. In Kirkcaldy, we’ve closer to 50% – and that share is growing. Some might see that as a challenge. We see it as a plus – making Kirkcaldy’s offering unique. One independent business to open their doors this summer is The Bakers Field Cafe on Tollbooth Street. We took time out to discover this new destination for vegetarians and vegans – to profile one of the town’s independent trailblazers …

Roslyn Fawns is the lady behind The Bakers Field. At just 23 years old, she is a breath of fresh air in Scotland’s food & drink industry. She previously worked in PR for a gourmet food company but is bringing lots of different experiences to the fore in her new venture.

Roslyn explains: “I’m very much a foodie and have a particular interest in nutrition, fitness, health and wellbeing.” She adds: “I was scouted as a model and did a variety of modeling projects from runway to print and editorial work – including for Brooklyn Fashion Week, United Nations (New York), Knock News Magazine working with various designers” … so she understands the importance of presentation.

On a personal level, she cites her work in helping to set up a charity fashion and music festival as one of her greatest achievements to date – again, all experiences that have helped to best understand the new business, operations, logistics and customer care. On the business front, The Bakers Field employs five people, including Roslyn’s mother, Juliet. Roslyn says: “My mother has been extremely supportive and helped develop the recipes. She also works as one of the chefs in the cafe.

The recipes are the key: Roslyn adds: “We have developed the recipes over a period of time and everything has a unique twist – such as our healthy vegan banana split with handmade refined sugar free granola. We source ethical products – like our organic, Fairtrade, rainforest-alliance coffee and ethical tea from nearby St Andrews. We also bake the bread for our vegan seeded baguettes and we’re baking vegan croissants and scones daily too.

You get the impression Roslyn has packed a great deal into her 23 years. The Bakers Field is a fantastic new business in Kirkcaldy – one that is already winning top reviews and numerous plaudits. Roslyn says: “I worked extremely hard to get to this stage and put a lot of thought into the food, products, decor and atmosphere so people can enjoy themselves in a relaxing setting. I want The Bakers Field to have a friendly community vibe – and I’ve achieved this. That means a lot to me.

When our Ambassador, Sally, visited The Bakers Field, she was very impressed: “It has a lovely atmosphere. The owners are passionate about plant-based cooking and eating … even the staff get involved with the menu planning and ideas.” Sally adds: “Everything is cooked freshly from scratch. Their salads are full of colour, texture and taste – and there are cakes to satisfy any sweet tooth but minus the processed sugar.” Sally has a wee warning for meat eaters: “Beware! You might get your heads turned!

Every review posted to date has given them five stars … here’s a selection …

“Amazing food and amazing service! Went along on their opening day and enjoyed one of the vegan option from the menu, it was colourful and delicious, even treated myself to a vegan cake! Very happy to finally have somewhere vegan in Kirkcaldy, will be back a lot more!”

“So happy that this place has opened recently in Kirkcaldy. Only had coffee/tea and cakey things so far but they’ve all been yummy and the savoury offerings look great too. It’s very friendly, laid back and unpretentious though all done with a wee touch of class.”

“So wonderful to see places like this opening in Kirkcaldy. A welcome move away from the big stores that have decimated High Streets up and down the country.”

“Great food, great service, great coffee, great atmosphere. Totally accessible for wheelchair users. Loved it and will be back!”

So next time you’re in town – or if you’re planning a visit soon – take time out to discover The Bakers Field.
