Nie ma za co! A warm welcome on the high street …

Marietta Szyrowska loves the sea. When she was growing up in Poland, she would take the 20 minute bus ride to the shore near her hometown. Today, Marietta and her her partner, Klaudia Kalita, have the sea on their doorstep … and it was one of the main reasons for their move to Kirkcaldy. In the latest of our business profiles, we discover another independent business who has chosen to invest in our town … the new Folk Love polish cafe and restaurant …

Some years ago, Marietta’s sister travelled to London. She followed – and worked there for a couple of years in the hospitality industry. “I found it very busy – and wanted to live and work somewhere where the pace of life was less hectic.” Her travels took her north and she found work – again in the food and drink sector – this time in Dunfermline. She worked at Tony Macaroni and soon realised she wanted to to run her own place.

She and her partner live in Lochgelly. Marietta says: “We started to look for premises and we couldn’t find anything suitable. And then we came to Kirkcaldy and fell in love with the town.” Kirkcaldy is not dissimilar to the town in Poland where she spent her childhood. Wejherowo – not far from Gda??sk – has the same population as Kirkcaldy. When she was younger, she’d head to the coast to do holiday jobs working in cafes and restaurants – and Kirkcaldy reminds her of those days. “We love the fact that we’re right on the sea. That’s a great plus – and the people are wonderful.

Folk Love is on the corner of the High Street and Whytehouse Avenue. Marietta and Klaudia have turned the premises into a little corner of Poland with unmistakably Polish decor. They employ a head chef and two more staff – and are shaping their offering all the time to suit their customers’ needs. Marietta explains: “We have been open from 10am until 10pm, seven days a week, but we are looking at changing those hours to open later. If all goes to plan, we will be open from noon until late allowing us to host live events to match our food offering.

Folk Love has just under 50 covers and provides a traditional Polish menu with many dishes recogniseable to those who are either from the country or who have visited there: from their soups – Zurek, Pomidorowa and Rosol – to mains including Schabowy, Golabki and Zraz … not forgetting their menu of Vodkas! They have many … including flavoured vodkas from just ??2.

The restaurant’s customers divide across the week. Marietta says that the majority of visitors during the week are ‘local Scots’ whereas at the weekend, they are attracting many Polish people who live and work close by. She says: “That is a very Polish thing – to gather at the weekends with friends and family to enjoy food.” And they are planning more on the food front as time goes by …

She spoke of their plans for Christmas. Back in Poland, Christmas Eve is the biggest celebration – and gathering. Marietta adds: “In Poland, it is traditional to have a dozen different dishes on Christmas Eve – the 12 representing the disciples. That’s when Poles get together, exchange their presents and the meal begins the Christmas festivities.
